If you want to give a new use to the shirts that you no longer use there’s nothing better than creating new clothes with them, so today we are going to tell you how to make a skirt with recycled fabric. It’s a simple and fresh model, ideal to use on informal occasions.
How to make a skirt with recycled fabric
You will need:
- 2 t-shirts, approximately the same size.
- Pair of scissors.
- Measuring tape.
- Chalk or fabric marker.
- Sewing machine.
- Elastic tape or cord (optional).
Step by step:
To make the skirt, is better to use 2 shirts that have a similar thickness and elasticity. You can use complementary or contrasting colors, it all depends on your taste.
Start by cutting each shirt into 2 large rectangles, front and back. Cut the front part first, as seen in the picture.
Then cut the same size on the back. Repeat this step for the other shirt, you can use the rectangle on the first shirt as a template but they don’t need to be exactly the same size.
At this point you should have 4 large rectangles like these:
Next, you must measure your waist and then divide that number by 8 (we are going to call that measure X). For example, if your waist is 88 cm the measure X will be 11 cm. Mark measuret X from one end of the top (through the shorter side). Then mark the measure X at the other end on the opposite side.
Mark a diagonal line between the X on one side and the X on the other side. Cut along the line (the idea is to make each piece a triangle).
Repeat this step for each piece of fabric until you have created 8 panels (pieces).
Next, decide in what order you are going to place the panels. Place them together to determine position.
Once you have the design, sew the first two panels, lining up the top edges. The bottom edges will not line up, just sew until you reach the end of each panel. A zigzag stitch is best for this work.
Continue through each panel, until you get to join the last and the first panel. The basic skirt design is ready.
The bottom edges are most likely crooked, you can choose to just cut the bottom or sew a hem.
If you measured your waist well and followed the instructions, the skirt should fit well, but if it feels too loose you can add an elastic band or a drawstring.
Important reminder: do not throw away the excess pieces of the shirt, because it goes without saying that there are an infinite number of projects that you can carry out with recycled fabric, even with the smallest pieces.
